Keep Slack active: availability and away status

Slack has two separate things: your availability, the dot next to your name, and your status, the message you write. Only activity keeps the dot active.

Status and availability are different

Slack defines a status as a message that tells others what you are up to, and availability as the dot that shows if you are active in Slack[1]. A status such as “Lunch” or a scheduled status does not make the dot green; it only adds information.

When Slack sets you away

  • Desktop: after 10 minutes of inactivity[1].
  • Mobile: when you navigate away from the app or close it[1].
  • Manual: when you choose Set yourself as away from your profile picture.

Slack's developer documentation adds that apps cannot force a user to appear active: they can only set a user to away or back to automatic[2]. Tools that promise to keep Slack green through an API are therefore not working the way they claim.

Set yourself as active

If you set yourself away manually, switch back from your profile picture with Set yourself as active (on mobile: tap your profile picture, then Set yourself as active)[1]. This clears manual away; it does not override the automatic 10-minute rule.

What keeps the dot active, and what does not

MethodEffect on Slack availability
Using the computer normally with Slack openActive
Screen kept on without input (browser tool, caffeinate, PowerToys)No effect: inactivity still counts
Real mouse input (phone jiggler or a USB device)Can count as activity on that computer; not guaranteed
Slack mobile app in the backgroundAway
Status message or status scheduleChanges the message only, not the dot

Slack shows away while I am working

  • You were working in another app on the same computer but Slack did not register activity: open Slack and interact once to refresh.
  • You were last active on the phone and then put the app in the background.
  • The computer locked or slept, which stops all activity.
  • A keep-awake tool kept the screen on but generated no input.

Teams works on similar principles with different timers, see the Teams guide. If you wonder whether a jiggler would be noticed, read can mouse jigglers be detected, and for the wider picture what your employer can see.

Frequently asked questions

How long until Slack shows me as away?

After 10 minutes of desktop inactivity, or as soon as you leave the mobile app[1].

Can I make Slack show active all day?

Only by being active. Slack does not let users or apps force the active state[2].

Does a mouse jiggler keep Slack active?

A device that produces real input may count as activity. A screen-only keep-awake tool does not.
