Change Auto-Lock
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & Brightness, then Auto-Lock.
- Choose a length of time[1].
Apple notes that delaying or preventing Auto-Lock may increase power consumption[1]. Choose a long value only for the time you need it.
Auto-Lock is greyed out or stuck at 30 seconds
Low Power Mode sets Auto-Lock to 30 seconds[2]. Turn Low Power Mode off in Settings > Battery or Control Center, and Auto-Lock becomes adjustable again.
On a work or school device, a management profile can set the maximum Auto-Lock time you are allowed to pick[3]. In that case only the organisation can change it.
Keep the screen on from Safari
Safari on iOS and iPadOS 16.4 and later supports the Screen Wake Lock API[4]. Open the keep-awake tool and press Start: the screen stays on while that tab is in front, without changing Auto-Lock. It stops when you switch apps, lock the phone or press Stop. If Low Power Mode is on, the browser may refuse the request.
Using an iPhone or iPad as a mouse jiggler
The phone jiggler runs in Safari and keeps the screen on while the pattern moves. iPhone Safari may not offer true full screen for web pages; the pattern then fills the browser window. Remember the difference: keeping your phone awake does nothing for the computer unless the mouse actually reads the pattern. If it does not, see mouse jiggler not working.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I choose Never for Auto-Lock?
Is it the same on iPad?
Yes. The setting is also under Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock, and Low Power Mode applies to iPad as well.
